CHAPTER 6

EQUIPMENT MANAGER

Some careers in sports take employees onto the field, close to the action and the athletes. Daniel Deming is the assistant sports equipment manager for D.C. United, an American professional soccer club based in Washington, DC. On a daily basis, Deming works closely with the soccer team’s players and staff. As an equipment manager, Deming is responsible for the team’s equipment. Before practice, he sets up practice gear in each player’s locker, pumps up balls, and sets up the day’s drills on the field. After practice, Deming collects the players’ practice gear, washes it, and gets it ready for the next day. He keeps the players’ lounge stocked with snacks like bagels, bananas, and cereal in case the players want to eat before or after practice. When the team travels for a game, Deming and the team’s other equipment managers pack twenty-five to thirty-five bags of equipment for each trip. Deming even prints player jerseys at the stadium and orders gear for each season. Although the days can be long, Deming loves his job and the experiences he is gaining in the position.

The team equipment manager orders and maintains the red uniforms for this soccer team, along with necessary equipment and supplies for the team’s games and practices.
